The character is leaning forward, eyes raised toward the viewer, hair pulled up with strands falling in front of his face. The black clothing occupies the entire lower half of the scroll, rendered in broad, flat areas without detail.

This emptiness in the lower section is a rare and successful choice: it focuses all attention on the face and gives the image a sense of breathing room not found in cluttered compositions. Midnight blues and blacks dominate, with cold light on the skin. It is an atmospheric portrait, best hung where you can see it up close rather than from across a room.
