An open, white maw, bristling with long teeth, occupies the entire top of the scroll. Below it, Megumi reaches out his hand, calm, without looking at the creature. The contrast between the panic that such a scene should incite and the character's attitude is what makes the image so compelling.

The treatment is very painterly: the creature's fur is rendered with bold brushstrokes, the teeth are applied in pure white, and the whole piece blends into a dark purple. This is an image that is best viewed from a distance first—for the general form—and then up close, for the texture. It works particularly well on a light-colored wall, where the white of the maw does not get lost.
