Suguru Geto and the blue dragon

Geto approaches us, in a long kimono, hands in his sleeves, and behind him a blue dragon unfolds across the entire width of the scroll. The ground reflects the light as if after the rain; the background shifts to black at the top.

The creature is rendered in electric blue on a dark background, with a luminous outline that distinctly sets it apart. It is a scene-setting image: the character walks, the creature follows, and nothing has happened yet. This restrained tension is what distinguishes it from combat illustrations. It works well in a hallway, where you cross paths with the character while walking in the opposite direction.
