The hand occupies the foreground, open and enormous relative to the face behind it—a forced perspective effect that gives the impression the character is coming toward you. Pink flashes of lightning run along the arm and up toward the top of the scroll.

This forced perspective is a magazine cover technique, and it is pushed to the limit here: the fingers in the foreground are intentionally blurred, with the face sharp just behind them. The result creates a depth that few vertical illustrations achieve. An uncompromising midnight blue and pink palette, on a dark background that leaves all the light to the lightning.
