The choice of subject is no accident. For twenty-five years, One Piece films have told stories outside the manga: a never-before-seen island, a disposable antagonist, a crew that leaves as they came. God Valley does exactly the opposite. It is a piece of canon, a battle the manga has mentioned since chapter 957 without ever having shown it.

What really happened at God Valley?

38 years ago, on an island in the West Blue, two men who hated each other teamed up to take down the most dangerous pirate of their era. On one side, Gol D. Roger, pirate. On the other, Monkey D. Garp, Vice Admiral. Facing them, the Rocks crew, led by Rocks D. Xebec.

What the Marine remembers fits in one line: Garp protected Celestial Dragons and earned his nickname of Hero of the Marine. What it never said is that he wouldn't have succeeded without a pirate by his side. Rocks died that day, his crew exploded, and the World Government erased the event from history books — to the point that even the name Rocks D. Xebec became untraceable.

It is this cover-up that makes the battle so anticipated. For over nine hundred chapters, God Valley existed only as a rumor among old soldiers.

Why did the God Valley incident happen?

Two logics collided on the same island on the same day, and it is this clash that caused the event.

On one side, the Celestial Dragons. God Valley was not a territory of the World Government, and that is precisely what made it useful: an island off the official maps, where the world nobility could organize what they would never have dared elsewhere. Kuma's flashback showed what the nobles were looking for there, and why entire populations were there against their will.

On the other side, the Rocks crew. Xebec did not land by chance. Striking where the Celestial Dragons were gathered, on an island the Government did not even recognize, meant targeting the heart of the system at the only place it was exposed.

The Marine could not let it happen — but they didn't have the means to win alone. Hence the unthinkable alliance between a Vice Admiral and a pirate. That is why God Valley happened: because three camps that did not speak to each other ended up in the same place, each for an unspeakable reason.

Who was present at God Valley?

This is where the film becomes dizzying. The names gathered on this island that day are those that shaped the following forty years:

• Monkey D. Garp — the Vice Admiral who would emerge as the Hero of the Marine.

• Charlotte Linlin, the future Big Mom, and Kaido, future Emperor of the Beasts — two of the four Emperors, in the same crew, before hating each other.

He carries the D. He gathered under the same flag men who would each become a world power. He died 38 years ago. And for more than nine hundred chapters, his name existed nowhere.

This is the true singularity of Rocks D. Xebec: the World Government did not just win against him, it deleted him. No bounty posted, no mention in the archives, nothing in the textbooks. It took until chapter 957 for an admiral to say his name out loud, and the whole world of One Piece discovered along with the readers that a pirate had once made the world nobility tremble.

His ambition, as reported, was not to find treasure but to become the king of the world — a phrasing that, in One Piece, does not refer to a metaphor but to a seat that is occupied. This is what makes him the direct ancestor of Blackbeard's ambitions, who even took his crew's name.

How God Valley disappeared

The island no longer exists. It purely and simply left the maps after the incident, and it is one of the most discussed mysteries in the series. God Valley was an island in the West Blue not affiliated with the World Government, which, in One Piece, is never an administrative detail.

The manga began to lift the veil with Kuma's past, which revealed what the Celestial Dragons were doing there. Our One Piece world map places the West Blue in the general geography: it is one of the four seas, the one Trafalgar Law and Nico Robin also come from.

What the Elbaf arc is currently revealing

This is what makes the announcement unique, and it must be said clearly: the manga is telling the story of God Valley right now. The Elbaf arc, currently being published, dedicates a flashback to it that involves the kingdom of giants and its king, Harald.

In other words, Toei has dated a film for 2027 about an event whose details readers are discovering week after week. It's an unusual gamble, and it means two things: the film won't be able to deviate too much from what Oda is writing, and those reading the manga will have a considerable head start over those waiting for 2027.

One Piece Film Baad: what we know (little)

The second film is called Baad and will be released in 2029. That's it. No synopsis, no announced crew, not even confirmation that it will be a canonical story like God Valley or an independent story like in the old days.

The only clue lies in the way the two titles were announced together: Toei set two milestones two years apart, which looks more like a schedule designed to accompany the final stretch of the manga than two independent projects.

What the film will have to settle

A film about a flashback currently being published is a perilous exercise. Here are the points that Toei will not be able to bypass, and on which readers are waiting:

• How Rocks died. We know he died at God Valley. We don't know by whose hand, nor how a man of that caliber could fall in a single day.
• What Roger gained there. He was not yet King of the Pirates. This battle happens fourteen years before his execution: what did it change for him?
• What the Marine really protected. The official version says "Celestial Dragons." Kuma's flashback has already shown that the reality of the island was less glamorous.
• Why the island disappeared. An island doesn't vanish from a map by accident.
• The role of Elbaf. The current arc involves the kingdom of giants in this story — a thread no one saw coming.

If the manga answers everything by 2027, the film will be an adaptation. If it hasn't finished, Toei will have to choose between waiting for Oda and getting ahead of him. This is the real suspense of this announcement.
