The 20 best fighting anime: the ranking, from 20th to 1st

Deux combattants silhouettés s'entrechoquent en plein vol dans une arène colossale de nuit, explosion orange et bleue au point d'impact devant des gradins pleins

What is the best combat anime? Not the best scene — the best series, the one that delivers memorable clashes for dozens of episodes. The question deserves better than a copy-pasted list: here is our argued top 20, from 20th to 1st, including the grading criteria, community ratings for each series, a summary table with where to watch, and a detour through the scenes everyone mentions. From classics (Fist of the North Star, Saint Seiya) to current peaks, there is something for every school of thought — and for what's coming out this year, our Top anime 2026 takes over.

The essentials in brief

  • Our #1: Hunter x Hunter — Nen makes every duel a game of chess, and communities give it the highest rating in the ranking.
  • The most beautiful: Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen, the two faces of modern spectacle — ufotable's watercolor against MAPPA's martial arts camera.
  • The founder: Dragon Ball Z — auras, transformations, and charging screams: the entire vocabulary of the genre comes from here.
  • To start without catching up: Solo Leveling or Chainsaw Man — twelve episodes, no prerequisites, immediate effect.
  • Two unapologetic surprises: Kengan Ashura and Baki, the martial arts side without powers — brutal, technical, addictive.

Summary

How we ranked them

Four criteria, applied consistently across the board: choreography (the quality and consistency of animation over time, not just in highlight-reel episodes), the combat system (clear rules that make clashes readable and tactical), consistency (a 100-episode series that maintains its level is worth more than a flash in the pan), and influence on the genre. The AniList and MyAnimeList ratings, taken on August 24, 2026, are displayed as a reference — they do not make the ranking, they inform it. Each series also receives a Manga Horizon score out of 20: the sum of our four criteria, each scored out of 5.

We go up from 20th to the top. Each entry provides our argument, community ratings, and the corresponding collection if the license is available on our site.

20. Hell's Paradise

Gabimaru enveloped in flames facing giant flower-creatures in a dark garden
Shinsenkyô: flowers, swords, and no innocents.

Death row convicts escorted by their executioners on an island that kills everyone: the setting does half the work, the blades do the rest. Hell's Paradise practices elegant and lethal combat, where every duel pits schools against one another — the brute force of Gabimaru, the impassive style of the Yamada Asaemon. The second season, aired this winter, confirmed that the series also knows how to choreograph the supernatural. The best marriage of flowers and swords in the genre.

19. Tokyo Ghoul

Kaneki with white hair, ghoul mask, and scarlet kagune deployed over a city at twilight
Kaneki's kagune: a weapon that mainly says who is suffering.

Combat as tragedy. Every clash of Kaneki is a loss — of humanity, of friends, of himself — and that is what makes the kagune unforgettable: these scarlet organic weapons tell the state of the one who bears them. The first season remains a shock, and the face-off with Jason a moment no one forgets. Less technical than the heavyweights of this ranking, but no combat anime strikes harder at the heart.

Scores: Manga Horizon 13.5/20 · AniList 7.6 · MyAnimeList 7.79 · Available: our Tokyo Ghoul figures — including our Ken Kaneki, scarlet kagune

18. Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac

Seiya in Pegasus armor concentrating a sphere of cosmos, winged horse constellation starred behind him
The cosmos, the armor, the constellation: the grammar of 1986 is still in use.

The heritage. Saint Seiya taught an entire generation what an impossible comeback was: the cosmos igniting, attacks shouted before being launched, the twelve houses to cross in armor. The animation has aged, the formula has not — half of the shonen on this page owe it their codes. Pegasus Meteors are still being launched in every schoolyard.

Scores: Manga Horizon 14/20 · AniList 7.3

17. Fist of the North Star

Kenshiro shirtless, the seven glowing scars on his chest, in a ruined city streaked with red lightning
Seven scars, a desert of ruins: the year zero of post-apocalyptic combat.

Fist of the North Star is the year zero of post-apocalyptic combat: a martial art that breaks enemies from the inside, lethal pressure points, a taciturn colossus in a ruined world. Brutal, cult, parodied a thousand times, never equaled in its terrain. We rank it here for its influence — Baki, Kengan Ashura, and the entire martial arts side of the genre descend from it. You are already dead, as they say.

Scores: Manga Horizon 14/20 · AniList 7.6

16. My Hero Academia

Bakugo crackling with orange explosions and Deku surrounded by green lightning, back to back, shouting their rivalry
Deku and Bakugo: the most well-developed rivalry of their generation.

Combat shonen at superhero school. My Hero Academia shines less by excess than by readability: every Quirk has rules, every clash exploits them, and the U.A. high school tournaments are among the best-constructed in the genre. Deku vs. Bakugo — the subject of our image — remains a rivalry of writing as much as of fists. The series concluded in 2025: the catch-up can be done in one go, including the finale.

15. Baki

Baki from behind, muscles bulging, facing Yujiro Hanma in double biceps pose in a dusty underground arena
Yujiro facing his son: the most excessive family duel in animation.

Unapologetic excess. In Baki, muscles have muscles, backs trace demons, and plausibility is left at the door — it's the price for pure pleasure: human monsters trading blows in an underground arena, without powers, without magic, with only the strength of the body. The 2018 series brought the saga back to the forefront. Our image summarizes the affair: Yujiro Hanma, the Ogre, facing his son. You don't watch Baki for the nuance.

Scores: Manga Horizon 14.5/20 · AniList 7.2

14. Kengan Ashura

Ohma Tokita in close-up, glowing red eye and scarred torso, chains and arena flames behind him
Ohma Tokita: the look of someone who has already read your guard.

The serious counterpart to Baki. Kengan Ashura pits gladiators against each other on behalf of multinational corporations and takes martial arts literally: real styles, explained feints, adaptations in the middle of a duel. Ohma Tokita and his "Niko" style are worth the watch alone. The 3D animation divides, but the technicality wins everyone over — it is the favorite series of MMA practitioners, and that is no coincidence.

Scores: Manga Horizon 15/20 · AniList 7.3

13. Chainsaw Man

Denji roaring chainsaw-head, blades on his arms, carving through tentacle-demons under a yellow moon
Denji at work: the most visceral combat of the ranking.

Brutality brought to the screen. Every clash of Denji is filmed like a horror scene: camera at ground level, silences before the impact, blood in clean sprays. MAPPA gave Chainsaw Man the polish of a feature film, and the movie dedicated to Reze, at the end of 2025, raised the bar even further. It is not the most choreographed combat on this page — it is the most visceral. The Assassins arc, still without a date, promises worse.

Scores: Manga Horizon 15/20 · AniList 8.3 · MyAnimeList 8.42 · Available: our Chainsaw Man figures — including our Denji, chainsaws out

12. Yu Yu Hakusho

Hiei, Yusuke, Kurama, and Kuwabara gathered under a beam of light in a devastated landscape
The Dark Tournament quartet: the grammar of the genre, set in 1993.

The direct ancestor of half of this ranking. The Dark Tournament of Yu Yu Hakusho set the grammar of modern combat as early as 1993: escalation, powers revealed in the middle of a duel, adversaries who become allies. Yoshihiro Togashi would refine the formula in Hunter x Hunter — his other series, at the very top of this page. Yusuke's spirit gun is thirty years old; its combat scenes haven't aged a day.

Scores: Manga Horizon 15.5/20 · AniList 8.3

11. Mob Psycho 100

Silhouette of Mob with white eyes in the heart of a storm of purple psychic lightning in a ruined street
100%: when Mob's defenses break, the screen becomes a painting.

Combat as an internal explosion. Mob refuses to fight, and the whole series tends toward those moments where his defenses break — the famous 100%. Studio Bones then unleashes psychedelic animation that no one equals: the city bends, colors saturate, geometry gives up. Three seasons, zero decline. The best argument against the idea that a great fight would need a great warrior.

Scores:** Manga Horizon **15.5/20 · AniList 8.4 · MyAnimeList 8.49

10. One Punch Man

Saitama furious, red-gloved fist launched forward, rock pulverized all around him
One punch will be enough — but what a punch.

The founding paradox: a hero who wins in one punch, in the series with the most spectacular combat. The first season of One Punch Man remains a peak of televised animation — Saitama vs. Boros appears in all scene rankings, including ours. Parody hinders nothing: it liberates. The following seasons eased off; the first is enough to justify the spot.

Scores: Manga Horizon 16/20 · AniList 8.3 · MyAnimeList 8.47 · Available: our One Punch Man iPhone cases — including our Saitama in his white cape

9. Solo Leveling

Sung Jinwoo with glowing blue eyes in front of his army of purple shadows under a red moon
The Monarch and his shadows: power progression in its purest form.

Power progression in its purest form. Solo Leveling tells only one thing — a weak hunter becoming the absolute weapon — and tells it with fearsome efficiency: each arc brings its milestone, each milestone its demonstration fight. A-1 Pictures brings a rare action readability to it, all in speed and purple shadows. An ideal gateway to the genre: twelve episodes, no prerequisites, immediate effect.

Scores: Manga Horizon 16/20 · AniList 8.1 · MyAnimeList 8.15 · Available: our Solo Leveling figures — including our Sung Jinwoo, coat and daggers

8. Attack on Titan

Eren equipped with the omni-directional mobility gear facing the Colossal Titan emerging from the flaming wall
The day the Colossal looked over the wall.

The only three-dimensional combat system in the ranking. The omni-directional mobility gear in Attack on Titan turns every clash into a vertiginous experience: you slice through the air between rooftops, orbit around a giant, strike the nape of the neck while passing by. No series gives such a physical sensation of movement. Add stakes that crush the characters, and you get fights from which one emerges exhausted — in the best sense of the term.

Scores: Manga Horizon 16.5/20 · AniList 8.5 · Available: our Attack on Titan figures — including our Levi Ackerman

7. Naruto Shippuden

Naruto with Rasengan facing Sasuke with Chidori in a valley of statues, watched by Itachi, Deidara, Kakashi, and Sakura
Rasengan vs. Chidori: the valley where everything is decided.

Choreography as a school. Naruto has produced more cult fights than any series of its generation — Lee vs. Gaara, Naruto vs. Pain, the Valley of the End — clashes that animators around the world study frame by frame. The taijutsu is readable, the jutsu codified, the emotion never far away. Five hundred episodes, some filler, yes: our filler-free list solves the problem.

6. One Piece

Luffy's fist charged with lightning before Law, Zoro, Kid, and Sanji, auras unleashed on a nocturnal battlefield
The Worst Generation united: Wano changed the status of One Piece.

Endurance rewarded. One Piece took twenty years to earn its place in this kind of ranking: the Wano turning point, then Egghead and Elbaf, raised the animation to the level of the writing. Luffy vs. Kaido and the awakening of Gear 5 count among the bravura pieces of the decade. As for the substance, it hasn't moved: fights that pay off ten years of waiting, against adversaries we love to hate. The marathon that ends in a sprint.

5. Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War

Ichigo with black blade in the center, laughing Kenpachi and Byakuya in a swirl of petals, red energy crescents
Thousand-Year Blood War: every bankai is an event.

A return to the top. The Thousand-Year Blood War reminded us why Bleach was a pillar: old-school sword duels, magnified by modern production—deep blacks, white lights, apocalyptic releases. Kenpachi, Byakuya, Ichigo: every bankai is an event, and Part 4 concludes the war this year. To settle the score between blades, our ranking of bankai sorts them out.

4. Dragon Ball Z

Goku as a Super Saiyan concentrating an incandescent energy sphere between his hands above a rocky desert
The vocabulary of the genre—auras, powering up, screaming—invented here.

The founder. Everything this page contains—auras, transformations, energy beams, charge times, screams—comes from here. Dragon Ball Z invented the vocabulary of anime combat and scenes that forty years haven't faded: Goku vs. Frieza on Namek remains the gold standard for long-running duels. You might prefer better-paced series, but you can’t rank anything without it. The patriarch—and he still hits hard.

3. Demon Slayer

Tanjiro slicing through a wave of fire, surrounded by Nezuko, Zenitsu, Inosuke and the Hashira, under demon eyes
Ufotable's Breathing styles: every duel is a painting.

Spectacle in its purest form. With Ufotable, every Breathing style becomes a painting: Tanjiro’s water, Rengoku’s flames, Zenitsu’s lightning. Demon Slayer redefined visual expectations for televised combat—the Infinity Train and Tengen’s duel in the Entertainment District set new milestones. The Infinity Castle trilogy, started in 2025, is set to conclude at the same level. Our ranked Hashira show who holds the spotlight.

Ratings: Manga Horizon 18/20 · AniList 8.3 · MyAnimeList 8.4 · From our shop: our Demon Slayer figurines — including our Akaza, the Upper Moon

2. Jujutsu Kaisen

Gojo lowering his sunglasses, a spark of blue energy at his fingertip, back-to-back with Geto in a glass building
Gojo and Geto, back-to-back: modern choreography has a face.

The choreographic reference of the decade. Jujutsu Kaisen films its fights like martial arts short films: mobile camera, readable feints, sharp impacts. Shibuya, then the Culling Game this year—#1 in our 2026 ranking—delivered a chain of legendary duels, and Gojo vs. Sukuna is arguably the most dissected fight of its generation: our in-depth report is dedicated to it.

Ratings: Manga Horizon 18.5/20 · AniList 8.4 · From our shop: our Jujutsu Kaisen figurines — including our Gojo Satoru victorious

1. Hunter x Hunter

Gon, Killua and Kurapika with scarlet eyes, chains taut, under two menacing faces and a red moon
Nen: rules, constraints, victories through wit. The most intelligent combat in the genre.

The most intelligent combat ever animated. The nen system in Hunter x Hunter turns every confrontation into a chess match: clear rules, freely chosen constraints that multiply power, victories won by wit rather than brute force. The Chimera Ant arc—Netero vs. Meruem at its peak—is considered by many to be the pinnacle of shonen, regardless of the criteria. It holds the highest score in this ranking among communities, and is our #1 without hesitation: no one makes you think about a fight like Togashi.

The scenes everyone cites

Dark collector's room: two silhouettes on a sofa in front of five screens showing anime duels, walls with shelves of figurines
A series ranking doesn't tell the whole story: some duels have become monuments in their own right.

A series ranking doesn't replace the monuments: Rock Lee vs. Gaara, Netero vs. Meruem, Saitama vs. Boros, Goku vs. Frieza—scenes more famous than many entire series. We have dedicated sections to them: the Gojo vs. Sukuna duel broken down round by round, the Bleach bankai ranking, the most striking transformations in anime, the Akatsuki members ranking, and the tier list of One Piece characters. Plenty to extend each entry in this top list by its moment of glory.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the 10 best combat anime?

In order of our ranking: Hunter x Hunter, Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, Dragon Ball Z, Bleach (Thousand-Year Blood War), One Piece, Naruto Shippuden, Attack on Titan, Solo Leveling, and One Punch Man. The next ten—from Mob Psycho 100 to Hell's Paradise—are detailed above, with community ratings for each.

Which is the best combat anime?

Hunter x Hunter, for the depth of its system: nen turns every duel into a chess game, and the Chimera Ant arc remains an absolute reference. If you are looking for modern choreography rather than tactics, Jujutsu Kaisen is the other defensible answer—it is, in fact, our #1 for the current year.

Which anime feature the most powerful characters?

Raw power is a battle between Dragon Ball Z, One Punch Man—Saitama wins on principle—and late-series monsters like Meruem in Hunter x Hunter or Kaido in One Piece. We have three dedicated guides on the subject: our tier list of the strongest One Piece characters, our Gojo vs. Sukuna duel, and our ranking of the most striking transformations.

Which anime has the best combat animation?

Three studios dominate: Ufotable for Demon Slayer (digital watercolor breathing styles), MAPPA for Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man (martial arts camera work), and Bones for Mob Psycho 100 (psychedelic explosion). Season 1 of One Punch Man, produced in 2015, still holds up to comparison—that says enough about its quality.

Which combat anime should I watch in 2026?

It is an exceptional year for the genre: Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 (Culling Game), the final part of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War on Disney+, the Elbaf arc of One Piece, and Mushoku Tensei Season 3. Our Top Anime 2026, updated every season, ranks everything coming out with the necessary catch-up time for each series.
