Roronoa Zoro: everything about One Piece's swordsman (Kuina, Mihawk, Haki, bounties, fights, figures)

Roronoa Zoro is Luffy's first companion, the swordsman of the Straw Hat crew and, for many readers, the most popular character in One Piece after his captain. A green-haired pirate hunter, three swords at his belt, a promise made to a dead childhood friend, an oath sworn in tears before the greatest swordsman in the world, and a bounty that ended up past the billion mark. This profile gathers everything you need to know about him: who he is and where he comes from, the promise to Kuina, his meeting with Luffy, his defeat against Mihawk and what it changed, the Three Sword Style and Haki, his great fights with their chapters and episodes, the history of his bounties, his journey from East Blue to Elbaf, his relationships within the crew, the anecdotes that make his legend, his appearances in the anime and the Netflix series, and finally how to choose his figure. The information comes from Eiichiro Oda's manga, the anime and the SBS; the profile is up to date as of 24 September 2026, through the Elbaf arc, and the passages that reveal recent chapters are flagged.

Who is Roronoa Zoro? The identity card

Zoro is the fighter of the Straw Hat crew, the one enemies call "Luffy's right-hand man" and whom Luffy never needed to name that way. He appears as early as chapter 3 of the manga, tied to a post in the yard of a Marine base, condemned for defending a little girl against the colonel's son. Luffy gives him back his swords, Zoro follows him, and the series has its first duo. Eiichiro Oda built the character on a simple idea: a man who chose a single goal, to be the best swordsman in the world, and who subordinates everything else to it, including his own life. He borrowed his name from the French pirate François l'Olonnais, and gave him green hair, a black bandana tied on his arm, three earrings on his left ear and, after the timeskip, a scar over his left eye that the manga has not yet explained as of 24 September 2026. Here are the facts people look up most often about him.

Detail What to remember

First appearances Chapter 3 of the manga, episodes 1 and 2 of the anime.

His character comes down to two traits that all of One Piece plays on: loyalty and discipline. Zoro never questions his captain's decisions, but he is the only crew member able to say no to him when the crew is at stake, as on the day he demands that Usopp apologize before coming back aboard. He trains when he is not sleeping, sleeps when he is not training, drinks without ever getting drunk, and keeps a samurai's calm until the moment he ties on his bandana: that is the sign the fight is getting serious. Our Roronoa Zoro Three Sword Style figure, 20 cm freezes him in that posture, bandana tied and third sword between his teeth, and our Roronoa Zoro wanted poster with the bandana reproduces the poster the Marines have updated three times.

Kuina, Shimotsuki and the promise

It all begins in a dojo in Shimotsuki Village, in the East Blue, where Zoro learns the sword under master Koshiro. He beats every adult, but he loses, two thousand and one times, to the master's daughter, Kuina, who is his age and dominates him effortlessly. Kuina, for her part, despairs: she keeps being told that a girl will never become the best swordswoman in the world. One evening, after their two thousand and first duel, the two children make each other a promise: one of them will become the greatest swordsman in the world. The next day, Kuina dies falling down a staircase, on her way to fetch a whetstone. Zoro asks Koshiro for the girl's sword, the Wado Ichimonji, and swears to carry their dream for both of them. It is one of the manga's first flashbacks, in chapter 5, adapted in episode 19 of the anime, and it is the key to the whole character: Zoro is not chasing glory, he is keeping a word given to a dead girl.

Two small PVC figures on a dojo diorama at night: young green-haired Zoro and dark-haired Kuina in white training kimonos, bamboo swords in hand, facing each other before a door open onto the full moon
Two thousand and one lost duels, a promise, an inherited sword: all of Zoro is in this Shimotsuki dojo.

The manga added, much later, a layer to this origin. Shimotsuki Village was founded by samurai who came from Wano, and Oda confirmed in the SBS that Zoro descends from the Shimotsuki clan, the clan of Kozaburo, the smith of the Wado Ichimonji and of Enma, as well as from the legendary samurai Ryuma, whose resurrected body he fought at Thriller Bark without knowing he was fighting an ancestor. This explains why Zoro looks so much like a samurai in a crew of pirates, why Wano welcomed him as one of its own, and why it was to him that Princess Hiyori entrusted Enma. The Wado Ichimonji, for its part, has never left him: our Wado Ichimonji replica, 72 cm, white blade and round guard, reproduces Kuina's sword. Its full story, that of the lost blades and that of their rank among the great swords of the world are in our guide to Zoro's swords.

From pirate hunter to Luffy's first companion

When the series begins, Zoro has left Shimotsuki to look for Mihawk and has gotten lost at sea. For want of anything better, he lives off bounties: he captures pirates with two companions, Johnny and Yosaku, and makes a name for himself in the East Blue, "the pirate hunter", a name Kaido himself will give him again twenty years later. Luffy finds him tied up in the yard of the Shells Town base, sentenced to death for defending a little girl against Helmeppo, the son of Colonel Morgan. Luffy offers him a place in his crew in exchange for his swords; Zoro accepts on one condition, stated from their very first meeting: if Luffy ever stands between him and his dream, he will kill him. He never will, and he will instead become the man who would accept to die for his captain without a moment's hesitation.

The relationship between the two is the foundation of the crew. Luffy never gives Zoro an order because he never needs to; Zoro never asks Luffy for an explanation because he trusts him. When the crew argues, it is Zoro who recalls the rule: the captain decides, and a crew that loses respect for its captain is finished. Our diorama of Zoro tied up and Luffy recreates the founding scene of Shells Town, the ropes, the post and the straw hat that has just changed a life.

Mihawk: the only defeat, the scar and the oath

At the Baratie, the floating restaurant where the crew recruits Sanji, Zoro crosses paths with the man he has been looking for since childhood: Dracule Mihawk, known as Hawk Eyes, the greatest swordsman in the world and one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. He challenges him. Mihawk parries his three swords with a pocket knife, breaks two of his blades, and opens his chest from shoulder to hip with his enormous black sword, Yoru. Before the final blow, Zoro refuses to step back: a wound on the back, he says, is a swordsman's shame. Mihawk spares him, impressed, and tells him to grow stronger and come find him. It is there, on the deck, bleeding and in tears, that Zoro swears to Luffy never to lose again until the day he has beaten that man. The scene, in chapters 50 to 52 and in episode 24, is one of the most voted for by readers in the series' polls.

The Baratie: Zoro's only defeat in a duel, a scar from shoulder to hip, and the oath never to lose again.

What follows is one of the finest reversals in One Piece. Two years later, after the crew is scattered at Sabaody, Kuma sends Zoro to the island of Kuraigana, where Mihawk happens to live, with only the ghost princess Perona and sword-wielding baboons for company. When Luffy asks his companions to train for two years, Zoro kneels before his rival and asks him to train him, swallowing his pride for his captain. Mihawk accepts. The sworn enemy becomes the master, and Zoro leaves Kuraigana with a scar over his left eye, mastered Haki and a strength that will never be doubted again. The Baratie duel remains, for now, Zoro's only defeat in single combat, and his rematch is one of the awaited moments of the manga's ending. Our Zoro vs Mihawk diorama recreates the Baratie duel, and the Dracule Mihawk figure with Yoru, 38 cm puts the master face to face with the student.

The Three Sword Style: attacks, Asura and his blades

Zoro fights with Santoryu, the Three Sword Style: one in each hand, the third clenched between his teeth. Oda invented it so that his swordsman would look like no other: where the swordsmen of other series had two blades, he gave him three. The style has its classics, which fans know by heart: the Oni Giri, the three-blade charge that opens almost all of his fights; the Tatsumaki, the slashing tornado; the Sanzen Sekai, the "three thousand worlds", the spinning cut he launched at Mihawk and which readers voted the second favorite attack of the whole series; the Shishi Sonson, the single-sword drawing cut that sliced through Mr. 1's steel; and Asura, that apparition with three heads and six arms, nine swords, which he manifested for the first time against Kaku at Enies Lobby, in chapter 417 and in episode 300. The manga eventually explained Asura: it is his dormant Conqueror's Haki taking shape without his knowing. Our Zoro slashing wind figure, 30 cm freezes a Tatsumaki in full rotation, and our two Asuras, the Zoro Asura statue, 52 cm and the Zoro the Asura figure, 22 cm, offer a choice between the cabinet piece and the shelf version.

Ashura: three heads, six arms, nine blades, first seen against Kaku, explained against Kaido as a Conqueror's Haki he never knew he had.

His blades have changed over the journey. Kuina's Wado Ichimonji has never left him. In Loguetown, he received the Sandai Kitetsu, a cursed sword he accepted by gambling his arm against the blade, and the Yubashiri, eaten away by rust at Enies Lobby. At Thriller Bark, the samurai Ryuma bequeathed him Shusui, a black blade and national treasure of Wano, which he returned to the country in exchange for Enma, Kozuki Oden's blade, offered by his daughter Hiyori. Enma is a sword that drains its wielder's Haki and forces him to tame it: Zoro left a withered arm to it before making it his most dangerous weapon. The grades of these swords, their ranking and the black blades are detailed in our guide to Zoro's swords; here, let us just note that three of them are in our store as figures: the cursed draw of the Sandai Kitetsu, the figure of Zoro sitting, Enma in hand, 15 cm, and the Zoro with the swords of Wano figure.

Zoro's Haki and the King of Hell

Haki is the inner strength that the fighters of One Piece learn to project. Zoro masters all three forms. Armament Haki, which hardens and blackens his blades, is his specialty according to Oda: it is what lets him wound opponents made of rubber, stone or fire, and it is what he pushes to the point of blackening his swords, as our Zoro black blades figure shows. Observation Haki lets him sense presences and anticipate blows. Conqueror's Haki, finally, the Haki of kings, he has possessed all his life without knowing it: it is Kaido who tells him, in chapter 1010, when Zoro's Asura opens a wound on him that will leave a scar on the body of the strongest of the Emperors.

PVC figure of Roronoa Zoro in his King of Hell style: three pitch-black blades wreathed in dark-red flames, a katana in each hand and the third between his teeth, open green coat, on a cracked stone base
King of Hell: Enma drains all of Zoro's Haki and gives it back as Conqueror's Haki, infused into three black blades.

The King of Hell is born from the meeting of that Haki and Enma. Against King, Kaido's lieutenant, Zoro deliberately lets the sword drain all his Haki; Enma, saturated, sends back a Conqueror's Haki that he learns to infuse into his blades (chapter 1033, episode 1060). Two chapters later, he names his new school, the King of Hell Three Sword Style, and cuts King down in one blow (chapter 1035, episode 1062). This technique has a cost: it empties his Haki reserves in a few minutes, and he needs time to rebuild them. It is with it that he finishes Rob Lucci on Egghead, and it is what, in the recent chapters of the Elbaf arc, becomes the subject of his apprenticeship under Scopper Gaban, a former companion of Gol D. Roger: Gaban confirms to him that he possesses Conqueror's Haki and teaches him to master it rather than endure it. Our Zoro King of Hell figure, 22 cm reproduces the pose from chapter 1035, the three blades haloed in black and flames.

Zoro's bounties, from 60 million to 1.111 billion

In One Piece, a bounty says what the Government thinks of you. Zoro's has been updated four times, and each one tells an arc.

Bounty After which arc Chapter / episode What it punishes
60,000,000 Alabasta Chapter 213 / episode 130 His first poster, for the fall of Baroque Works and the victory over Mr. 1.
120,000,000 Enies Lobby Chapter 435 / episode 320 The assault on the World Government and the defeat of Kaku.
320,000,000 Dressrosa Chapter 801 / episode 746 The fall of Doflamingo, where he sliced Pica.
1,111,000,000 Wano Chapter 1058 / episode 1086 Onigashima: Kaido's wound, King's death. He passes the billion.

With 1,111,000,000 berries, Zoro is second in the crew behind Luffy, who has been worth 3 billion since becoming an Emperor, and just ahead of Jinbe. The number made fans smile: four 1s, like his birthday, 11 November. His first poster, the one with the bandana, has become a decorative object in its own right: our Roronoa Zoro wanted poster, grey portrait offers a second, darker reading of it. To compare his bounty with those of the whole crew and of the Emperors, our complete ranking of One Piece bounties goes through the ten Straw Hat posters in order.

From East Blue to Elbaf: Zoro's evolution

The Zoro of East Blue is a proud young man who beats second-rate pirates and discovers, facing Mihawk, how high his dream sits. The one of the first half of the manga learns one lesson per arc: cutting steel with Mr. 1, standing up to the Government at Enies Lobby, and above all, at Thriller Bark, discovering that his strength is worth nothing if it does not protect his captain. The scene where he takes all of Luffy's pain upon himself, standing in a pool of blood, and answers Sanji "nothing happened", is the one that made him, for many readers, the most loyal character in the series.

The timeskip transforms him. The Zoro of Fish-Man Island, Punk Hazard and Dressrosa wins his fights in a few pages, and the manga deliberately keeps him away from opponents of his caliber until Wano, where everything converges: his origins, Enma, Conqueror's Haki, Kaido, King. After Onigashima, he is one of the rare characters to have wounded an Emperor with a sword. On Egghead, he settles his score with Rob Lucci, the enemy from Enies Lobby, without the outcome ever being in doubt. And in the Elbaf arc, the one the manga is writing in 2025 and 2026 and that the anime has been adapting since 5 April 2026, he meets Scopper Gaban, one of the pillars of Roger's crew, who puts words on what he has carried since Kaido: Conqueror's Haki, and how to tame it. Nearly thirty years after chapter 3, Zoro is exactly where Oda placed him from the start, one step away from Mihawk. To place each of these stages in the order of the series, our list of One Piece arcs in order gives the opening and closing chapters and episodes.

Luffy, Sanji, Perona, Hiyori: Zoro and the others

With Luffy, the relationship is that of a man and his captain, without a word too many: Zoro follows, protects, and calls the others to order. With Sanji, it is the opposite, a permanent, noisy rivalry, eyebrows versus seaweed, which hides the respect of two fighters who know they are the two wings of the crew. Fans have argued for years about which of the two is stronger; the manga, for its part, has always kept them level, one the victor over King, the other over Queen, on the same night. With Nami, there are unpaid debts and jabs; with Usopp, a demand for loyalty that nearly cost dearly at Water 7; with Robin, an initial wariness turned absolute trust; with Chopper, the role of a gruff big brother.

Three PVC figures back to back on a wooden base: Luffy in his straw hat and red cardigan in the center, Zoro in his green coat and bandana on the left, Sanji in a black suit with blond hair on the right
The crew's top three: the captain, the swordsman, the cook, two wings that have been bickering since the Baratie.

Outside the crew, three figures matter. Perona, the ghost princess of Thriller Bark, shares his two years of exile on Kuraigana and brings him back to Sabaody while grumbling and tending his wounds; their unlikely duo is one of fans' favorites. Tashigi, the Marine swordswoman, has Kuina's face, which unsettles Zoro at each of their encounters and keeps him from fighting her openly. And Hiyori, Kozuki Oden's daughter, entrusted him with Enma, her father's sword, after nursing him: she is the one who makes Zoro, the green-haired outsider, an heir of Wano. The trio of Luffy, Zoro and Sanji, the one readers call the "Monster Trio", is the most requested in our range: our Zoro and Sanji diorama puts the two rivals back to back, the Luffy, Zoro and Sanji iPhone case and the Luffy, Zoro and Sanji chibi t-shirt bring them together every day, and the wounded Luffy, Zoro or Sanji figure, 28 cm shows the three coming out of a fight.

Getting lost, sleeping, drinking: the anecdotes that make Zoro

Zoro is also one of the great comic engines of One Piece, and his flaws have become trademarks. He gets lost, always, everywhere, even in a straight line, even two steps from the ship, and he accuses the others of having moved. Oda turned this flaw into a running gag and, sometimes, a plot device: it is by getting lost that Zoro arrives at the right place at the right time. He sleeps anywhere, anytime, often in the middle of a battle, and he trains with weights no one else can lift. He drinks sake the way others drink water, and the manga has never shown him drunk. His most famous line is a lie: "nothing happened", said to Sanji to hide that he has just brushed death in his place.

Other details fuel fans' discussions. His scar over the left eye, which appeared during the two years of training, still has no explanation in the manga, and Oda has dodged the question several times. His earrings, three on the left, jingle in the anime with every movement of his head. His name comes from François l'Olonnais, a French pirate of the seventeenth century. And Vivi nicknamed him "Mr. Bushido" as early as Whisky Peak, which his opponents in Wano would confirm by calling him "the samurai". Our chibi figure of Zoro sitting, 13 cm shows him seated, ready for a nap, and the Zoro and the ink dragon iPhone case picks up the dragon motif that accompanies his strongest attacks.

Zoro in the anime and in the Netflix series

In the anime, Zoro has been voiced since 1999 by Kazuya Nakai, whose deep voice is inseparable from the character in Japan. In French, three actors have followed one another: Tony Beck until episode 195, Patrick Noérie until episode 750, then Alain Eloy since episode 751; a first dub, in 2003-2004, had given him the voice of Antoine Nouel. Here is where to find his great moments, and how far the adaptation had gone as of 24 September 2026.

Why is Zoro so popular?

In the popularity polls run by the magazine that publishes One Piece, Zoro is second behind Luffy in five of the six Japanese votes, and third in the sixth. In the great worldwide vote of 2021, where more than twelve million ballots were counted, he is second again, with over 1.4 million votes, and first in two regions of the world. His attack Sanzen Sekai was voted the second favorite attack of the series, and his tearful promise to Luffy, at the Baratie, is among the most voted scenes. On Google, "zoro" is one of the most searched anime character names in France, on a par with Gojo, and in our store he is, with 30 items, one of the most present characters of the license.

Several reasons add up. The character is simple to understand and impossible to bend: one goal, one word, one method. He embodies the ideal second-in-command, the one who is stronger than most heroes of other series but who chose to serve a captain, and this wordless loyalty touches readers of all ages. His scenes are among the strongest in the manga: the Baratie oath, "nothing happened", kneeling before Mihawk, Asura against Kaido. His look, finally, green hair, three swords, bandana, scars, is one of the most recognizable in manga, which also makes him one of the characters most often turned into figures. The swordsman who gets lost and sleeps is one of the rare shonen characters to be both the coolest and the funniest of his crew. Our Zoro iPhone case from the Crew series and our golden Sun of Nika and Zoro t-shirt carry that silhouette into everyday life.

Zoro figures and merchandise: how to choose

The Zoro range in our One Piece universe counts 30 items as we write: figures and dioramas, two katanas, wanted posters, iPhone cases, t-shirts and jerseys. Three questions are enough to choose. Which Zoro? The East Blue swordsman with the bandana and the green haramaki, the post-timeskip Zoro with the open green coat and the scar, or the Zorojuro of Wano in a kimono. Which scene? A guard pose is looked at; a scene, the Baratie, Kuma, Asura, the King of Hell, tells a story to every visitor. Which size? Chibis of 9 to 13 cm for a desk, 15 to 24 cm for a shelf, 30 cm and up for a centerpiece, and the 52 cm Asura for a cabinet all to itself.

LED-lit glass cabinet: three PVC figures of Roronoa Zoro in increasing sizes, a chibi with a bandana, a medium figure in his three-sword stance and a large Ashura statue with ghostly arms, with a white-sheathed katana replica on its stand
Chibi for the desk, 20 cm for the shelf, a 52 cm Asura for the cabinet: the size is chosen by the spot.

For a first figure, the Roronoa Zoro Three Sword Style figure, 20 cm is the safe bet: the pose everyone recognizes, at a size that fits on a living-room shelf. For a scene, the 22 cm King of Hell, the diorama against Mihawk and the diorama against Kaido are the three most requested pieces; the Zoro and the white tiger figure, 24 cm adds the tiger of his Tora Gari, one of his oldest attacks. For a gift you cannot get wrong, the chibi Zoro figure with drawn blade, 9 cm and the 13 cm sitting chibi stay within small budgets; and for collectors, the 52 cm Asura statue is the centerpiece of a display cabinet, to be chosen for a precise spot and protected behind glass. The katanas, finally, are decorative replicas to hang on a wall: the Wado Ichimonji for Kuina's faithful, the Zoro katana with black and gold saya, 72 cm for those who prefer the cursed blade.

One rule for everything made of PVC: no direct sunlight, which yellows the green of his hair and coat, and a closed cabinet above a certain value. Our guide to displaying and caring for figures covers lighting and heights; our guide to the rarest One Piece figures explains what gives a Zoro piece its value on the collectors' market; and if the figure is meant for someone else, our One Piece gift guide helps you choose by person and budget.

1,111,000,000 berries, since chapter 1058 and episode 1086, after the events of Wano. Before that, his bounty was 60 million after Alabasta, 120 million after Enies Lobby and 320 million after Dressrosa. It is the second highest bounty in the crew, behind Luffy and just ahead of Jinbe.

Why does Zoro use three swords?

It is his fighting style, Santoryu: one sword in each hand and the third between his teeth. Oda created it so that his swordsman would look like no other. The three current blades are Kuina's Wado Ichimonji, the Sandai Kitetsu and Enma; their history and rank are detailed in our guide to Zoro's swords.

Does Zoro have Conqueror's Haki?

Yes. Kaido reveals it to him in chapter 1010, when Zoro's Asura wounds him. Zoro then learns to infuse it into his blades thanks to Enma, in chapter 1033, which gives birth to the King of Hell. In the Elbaf arc, Scopper Gaban confirms this Haki to him and helps him master it.

What is Zoro's King of Hell?

The "King of Hell Three Sword Style" is the technique Zoro creates against King, in chapter 1035 and in episode 1062: he lets Enma drain all his Haki, then sends an infused Conqueror's Haki back into his three blades. It allowed him to beat King, then Rob Lucci on Egghead, but it empties his reserves in a few minutes.

Why does Zoro keep his left eye closed?

Zoro comes back from his two years of training with Mihawk with a scar across his left eye, which he has kept closed since. As of 24 September 2026, the manga has not explained its origin, and Oda has dodged the question several times in the SBS. It is one of the most discussed mysteries of the character.

Is Zoro Luffy's right-hand man?

In practice, yes: first member recruited, the most powerful fighter after the captain, and the one who calls the crew to order when needed. The manga does not formally give him that title, but his enemies, Rob Lucci most recently, refer to him as Luffy's number two.

Is Zoro stronger than Sanji?

The manga does not settle it: in Wano, they beat Kaido's two lieutenants on the same night, Zoro against King and Sanji against Queen, and their bounties follow the same curve. Zoro is traditionally considered the strongest fighter in the crew after Luffy; their respective places are discussed in our tier list of the strongest One Piece characters.

Will Zoro beat Mihawk?

It is one of the awaited moments of the manga's ending. Zoro lost to Mihawk at the Baratie, swore never to lose again, then was trained by him for two years. Since Wano and Elbaf, he masters Conqueror's Haki, which brings the deadline closer; as of 24 September 2026, the duel has not yet taken place.

Why does Zoro always get lost?

It is the character's most famous gag: he has no sense of direction, gets lost in a straight line and accuses the others of having moved. Oda has never explained it other than for comedy, and regularly uses it to make Zoro arrive at the right place by the wrong path.

Who was Kuina?

The daughter of the master of the Shimotsuki dojo, where Zoro grew up. She beat him two thousand and one times, and the two children promised each other that one of them would become the greatest swordsman in the world. She died the next day, falling down a staircase. Zoro has carried her sword, the Wado Ichimonji, since that day.

Is Zoro from Wano?

He was born in the East Blue, in Shimotsuki Village, but that village was founded by samurai who came from Wano, and Oda confirmed in the SBS that Zoro descends from the Shimotsuki clan and from the legendary samurai Ryuma. That is why Wano welcomed him as one of its own and entrusted him with Enma.
