The story behind the design

Zenitsu is the recurring gag of the series: he cries, he begs, he refuses to move forward. Then he faints from fear — and only then, unconscious, does he execute the only technique he ever managed to learn. The closed eyes in this illustration are therefore not a stylistic pose: it is literally the state in which he fights.

The rest of the design follows this logic. The character barely occupies the upper third, while the entire bottom is taken up by the electric arc. We don't see a portrait, we see movement — which corresponds to a technique whose principle is to move from one point to another faster than the eye.

Why does Zenitsu have his eyes closed?
