The story behind the design

Sanemi is the least amiable Hashira in the Demon Slayer Corps, and it's a deliberate writing choice: he starts his arc by attacking everyone, including his own allies. What we discover later explains everything, and retrospectively transforms every one of his lines.

The artistic choice for this illustration suits him well. No face, no camera gaze: we see him from behind, stopped, his weapon resting on his shoulder. The black and white treatment removes the background and retains only the silhouette and the kanji on the haori. This is what makes the case readable from a meter away, whereas a busy illustration would become a blotch of color.
