The story behind the figure

Jiraiya introduces himself as a pervy sage and writes novels that no one admits to reading. Why the red markings under the eyes?
They are the ritual makeup of the sages of Mount Myoboku, where Jiraiya learned sage mode from the toads. The sculpture's raised hands are the summoning pose — the one used to bring forth Gamabunta.
