Tengen Uzui, the portrait

The headband with large cut stones occupies the entire top of the scroll, and the same stones descend along the cheek in a pendant that goes all the way down the image. The eye, bright pink, is surrounded by makeup.

This is the most ornate of the nine portraits, and the only one where the accessory takes up as much space as the face. The mineral grays of the stones, the pink of the eye, and the black of the background compose a cold and unusual palette. The detail of the stone cutting is what justifies the large format here: in 25 × 75 cm, they become simple gray shapes.
