Megumi Fushiguro, the shadow and the full moon
The moon is full, white, positioned just above Megumi's shoulder. Behind him, a black mass is barely distinguishable from the background: two purple eyes, a mouth that can be guessed, and the rest left to the darkness. That is the aesthetic choice of this illustration — the creature is not shown, it is suggested, and that is what makes it unsettling.
In the foreground, Megumi reaches out his hand, palm open, in a gesture that looks as much like an invitation as a warning. His uniform blends into the night; only his face and hand remain illuminated. The palette consists of three notes: midnight blue, violet, and moon gray. On a light wall, this wall scroll creates a very distinct dark hole, like a window open to something else. On a dark wall, it half-disappears, letting only the moon shine through.
