Almost everything is black. Against this backdrop, two crossed hands in the foreground, very white, and a face marked with red appearing just above. The rest of the composition — clothing, setting, background — is left in the shadows, with a few flashes of red to guide the eye.

This chiaroscuro treatment is what sets this illustration apart: instead of showing everything, it only provides two illuminated areas and lets the brain reconstruct the rest. The result is a very graphic image, almost like a movie poster. On a white wall, the black rectangle reads from a distance as a solid shape; it is only upon approaching that one discovers the face.
