The Red and White Earring

A very recognizable red and white earring, hanging from an ear that is barely visible — this is the only precise detail in an image otherwise rendered in browns. The character's back is to us, leaning forward, with the blade extended to the right.

The composition is diagonal, from bottom left to top right, and the kanji on the haori follows this movement instead of remaining horizontal. This is a compositional detail that one does not immediately notice but which gives the whole its dynamism. On a wall, this scroll works better at eye level than hung high: one needs to see the earring.
