Obanai Iguro and the White Snake

A white snake wrapped around his shoulder, head raised to the left: no one else in the series walks around like this, and it's enough to identify the character without seeing his face. Above, a curved blade crosses the top of the scroll.

The snake is painted with much more detail than the rest of the image—scales, highlights, dark eye—creating a clear hierarchy: you look at the animal first, the man second. This choice reverses the logic of portraiture and gives the visual its strangeness. The pearly whites of the snake are the only luminous areas of the whole.
