Sanemi Shinazugawa and his kanji

One detail is enough to identify him: where all the others wear the same character, his haori displays a different one — the one he had painted himself. Short white hair, broad shoulders, he stands with his back to us, motionless, in almost total darkness.

The illustration is the most stripped-down in the series: no visible weapon, no movement, no special effects. A back, a garment, a character. This economy paradoxically makes it more menacing than the action visuals, and much easier to live with daily on a wall you look at every day. The grey of the hair and the white of the kanji are the only two light values; everything else descends towards black, without ever quite falling into it.
