A half-face, tightly framed, cut cleanly by the edge of the scroll. The scar streaks across the forehead, the eye is pale, with no visible pupil, and prayer beads hang down the neck to the bottom of the image.

This half-framing is the principle of the entire portrait series: only a part of the face is shown, and the vertical format does the rest. Here, the result is particularly striking, because the character is massive and the narrow scroll cannot contain him. Dark browns dominate, with the milky white of the eye as the only bright spot — a serious visual, to be hung where one passes close enough to see it.
