The story behind the design

This is the hardest challenge in merchandising: making a character recognizable without showing them. Here, three signs are enough — the letters of the tattoo, the two hat medallions, and the red bead necklace running along the bottom of the image. A One Piece reader identifies Ace in a second; anyone else just sees a graphic pattern of flames and lettering.

What do the letters and two faces represent?
The letters refer to the tattoo the character has on his arm, with his letter crossed out as it appears in the series. The two faces at the bottom are the medallions attached to his hat.

Doesn't a light background get dirty quickly?
