The story behind the design

The idea is simple and rarely well-executed: placing a colored character over the original pages they come from. Here, it works because the black and white background isn't just decorative—you can make out the panels, onomatopoeia, and reading flow. The medium tells the story of where the character comes from.

And the choice of Ace for this treatment is not arbitrary. He is a character associated with fire, and therefore with color: contrasting him against grey pages is exactly what makes him stand out. The orange has no competition in the image.
