The story behind the figurine

The Merry wasn't bought; it was gifted. Kaya gave it to Luffy and Usopp in Syrup Village, and its name comes from the butler who designed it. A modest caravel, without a deep keel or heavy artillery, it nonetheless carried the crew from Baratie to Alabasta, from Skypiea to Water Seven.

What the manga makes of it goes beyond just a ship. The Merry endures cannon fire, storms, and a descent down a waterfall, then begins to speak: its spirit, the Klabautermann, appears to thank the crew. It ends up set ablaze in the open sea, a sailor's funeral, and it is the only time the entire crew cries together.
