How we ranked them

Four criteria, applied consistently across the board: choreography (the quality and consistency of animation over time, not just in highlight-reel episodes), the combat system (clear rules that make clashes readable and tactical), consistency (a 100-episode series that maintains its level is worth more than a flash in the pan), and influence on the genre. The AniList and MyAnimeList ratings, taken on August 24, 2026, are displayed as a reference — they do not make the ranking, they inform it. Each series also receives a Manga Horizon score out of 20: the sum of our four criteria, each scored out of 5.

20. Hell's Paradise

Death row convicts escorted by their executioners on an island that kills everyone: the setting does half the work, the blades do the rest. Hell's Paradise practices elegant and lethal combat, where every duel pits schools against one another — the brute force of Gabimaru, the impassive style of the Yamada Asaemon. The second season, aired this winter, confirmed that the series also knows how to choreograph the supernatural. The best marriage of flowers and swords in the genre.

19. Tokyo Ghoul

Combat as tragedy. Every clash of Kaneki is a loss — of humanity, of friends, of himself — and that is what makes the kagune unforgettable: these scarlet organic weapons tell the state of the one who bears them. The first season remains a shock, and the face-off with Jason a moment no one forgets. Less technical than the heavyweights of this ranking, but no combat anime strikes harder at the heart.

18. Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac

The heritage. Saint Seiya taught an entire generation what an impossible comeback was: the cosmos igniting, attacks shouted before being launched, the twelve houses to cross in armor. The animation has aged, the formula has not — half of the shonen on this page owe it their codes. Pegasus Meteors are still being launched in every schoolyard.

17. Fist of the North Star

Fist of the North Star is the year zero of post-apocalyptic combat: a martial art that breaks enemies from the inside, lethal pressure points, a taciturn colossus in a ruined world. Brutal, cult, parodied a thousand times, never equaled in its terrain. We rank it here for its influence — Baki, Kengan Ashura, and the entire martial arts side of the genre descend from it. You are already dead, as they say.

16. My Hero Academia

Combat shonen at superhero school. My Hero Academia shines less by excess than by readability: every Quirk has rules, every clash exploits them, and the U.A. high school tournaments are among the best-constructed in the genre. Deku vs. Bakugo — the subject of our image — remains a rivalry of writing as much as of fists. The series concluded in 2025: the catch-up can be done in one go, including the finale.

15. Baki

Unapologetic excess. In Baki, muscles have muscles, backs trace demons, and plausibility is left at the door — it's the price for pure pleasure: human monsters trading blows in an underground arena, without powers, without magic, with only the strength of the body. The 2018 series brought the saga back to the forefront. Our image summarizes the affair: Yujiro Hanma, the Ogre, facing his son. You don't watch Baki for the nuance.

14. Kengan Ashura

The serious counterpart to Baki. Kengan Ashura pits gladiators against each other on behalf of multinational corporations and takes martial arts literally: real styles, explained feints, adaptations in the middle of a duel. Ohma Tokita and his "Niko" style are worth the watch alone. The 3D animation divides, but the technicality wins everyone over — it is the favorite series of MMA practitioners, and that is no coincidence.

13. Chainsaw Man

Brutality brought to the screen. Every clash of Denji is filmed like a horror scene: camera at ground level, silences before the impact, blood in clean sprays. MAPPA gave Chainsaw Man the polish of a feature film, and the movie dedicated to Reze, at the end of 2025, raised the bar even further. It is not the most choreographed combat on this page — it is the most visceral. The Assassins arc, still without a date, promises worse.

12. Yu Yu Hakusho

The direct ancestor of half of this ranking. The Dark Tournament of Yu Yu Hakusho set the grammar of modern combat as early as 1993: escalation, powers revealed in the middle of a duel, adversaries who become allies. Yoshihiro Togashi would refine the formula in Hunter x Hunter — his other series, at the very top of this page. Yusuke's spirit gun is thirty years old; its combat scenes haven't aged a day.

11. Mob Psycho 100

Combat as an internal explosion. Mob refuses to fight, and the whole series tends toward those moments where his defenses break — the famous 100%. Studio Bones then unleashes psychedelic animation that no one equals: the city bends, colors saturate, geometry gives up. Three seasons, zero decline. The best argument against the idea that a great fight would need a great warrior.

10. One Punch Man

The founding paradox: a hero who wins in one punch, in the series with the most spectacular combat. The first season of One Punch Man remains a peak of televised animation — Saitama vs. Boros appears in all scene rankings, including ours. Parody hinders nothing: it liberates. The following seasons eased off; the first is enough to justify the spot.

9. Solo Leveling

Power progression in its purest form. Solo Leveling tells only one thing — a weak hunter becoming the absolute weapon — and tells it with fearsome efficiency: each arc brings its milestone, each milestone its demonstration fight. A-1 Pictures brings a rare action readability to it, all in speed and purple shadows. An ideal gateway to the genre: twelve episodes, no prerequisites, immediate effect.

8. Attack on Titan

The only three-dimensional combat system in the ranking. The omni-directional mobility gear in Attack on Titan turns every clash into a vertiginous experience: you slice through the air between rooftops, orbit around a giant, strike the nape of the neck while passing by. No series gives such a physical sensation of movement. Add stakes that crush the characters, and you get fights from which one emerges exhausted — in the best sense of the term.

7. Naruto Shippuden

Choreography as a school. Naruto has produced more cult fights than any series of its generation — Lee vs. Gaara, Naruto vs. Pain, the Valley of the End — clashes that animators around the world study frame by frame. The taijutsu is readable, the jutsu codified, the emotion never far away. Five hundred episodes, some filler, yes: our filler-free list solves the problem.

6. One Piece

Endurance rewarded. One Piece took twenty years to earn its place in this kind of ranking: the Wano turning point, then Egghead and Elbaf, raised the animation to the level of the writing. Luffy vs. Kaido and the awakening of Gear 5 count among the bravura pieces of the decade. As for the substance, it hasn't moved: fights that pay off ten years of waiting, against adversaries we love to hate. The marathon that ends in a sprint.

5. Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War

A return to the top. The Thousand-Year Blood War reminded us why Bleach was a pillar: old-school sword duels, magnified by modern production—deep blacks, white lights, apocalyptic releases. Kenpachi, Byakuya, Ichigo: every bankai is an event, and Part 4 concludes the war this year. To settle the score between blades, our ranking of bankai sorts them out.

4. Dragon Ball Z

The founder. Everything this page contains—auras, transformations, energy beams, charge times, screams—comes from here. Dragon Ball Z invented the vocabulary of anime combat and scenes that forty years haven't faded: Goku vs. Frieza on Namek remains the gold standard for long-running duels. You might prefer better-paced series, but you can’t rank anything without it. The patriarch—and he still hits hard.

3. Demon Slayer

Spectacle in its purest form. With Ufotable, every Breathing style becomes a painting: Tanjiro’s water, Rengoku’s flames, Zenitsu’s lightning. Demon Slayer redefined visual expectations for televised combat—the Infinity Train and Tengen’s duel in the Entertainment District set new milestones. 2. Jujutsu Kaisen

The choreographic reference of the decade. Jujutsu Kaisen films its fights like martial arts short films: mobile camera, readable feints, sharp impacts. Shibuya, then the Culling Game this year—#1 in our 2026 ranking—delivered a chain of legendary duels, and Gojo vs. Sukuna is arguably the most dissected fight of its generation: our in-depth report is dedicated to it.

1. Hunter x Hunter

The most intelligent combat ever animated. The nen system in Hunter x Hunter turns every confrontation into a chess match: clear rules, freely chosen constraints that multiply power, victories won by wit rather than brute force. The Chimera Ant arc—Netero vs. Meruem at its peak—is considered by many to be the pinnacle of shonen, regardless of the criteria. It holds the highest score in this ranking among communities, and is our #1 without hesitation: no one makes you think about a fight like Togashi.
